Changes in blood tonicity are recognised by ismoreceptors in the circumventricular organs of the anterior hypothalamus. Afferent fibres connect the osmoreceptor to the neurones that synthesise vasopressin. Baroregulatory information, from afferent fibres that terminate in the brainstem nuclei, is relayed to the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei via the posteromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus.
